1662
A firman from the turk sultan, dated 2 March 1662 gave Apafi a free hand in domestic affairs, and the tribute to the Ottoman Porte was reduced. In the same time, the sultan instructed Ali, the pasha of Temesvar (Timisoara), and the new pasha of Varad (Oradea), Mehmed Küchük to seize the Habsburg-held fortresses in Transylvania.
After the imperial garrison from Szamosujvar (Gherla) managed to resist pasha Küchük’s troops, he moved on to Kolozsvar (Cluj Napoca). The turks aid for Apafi came with a price: the prince had to join Mehmed Küchük at the siege of Kolozsvar, which he did, with eight thousand of his troops. The siege started at 23 April 1662, but with no success for the turks, and when general Schneidau arriwed with his army, the pasha had to withdraw his forces.
